Work that sits between sound, image and ecology — immersive installation,
audioreactive performance, and electronic instruments built from the ground up.
Final Animal is the practice of Conor Maloney, an audiovisual artist based in
Galway, Ireland. The work moves between gallery installation, live performance
and instrument design, treating those as one continuous material rather than
separate disciplines.
A recurring method is scanning the natural world and rendering it as light.
Point clouds — trees, landscapes, organisms captured by LiDAR — are processed
and manipulated in real time, so that a subject can be both accurately recorded
and visibly falling apart.
The instruments are built for the same reason. A laser harp made for
SYNAESTHESIA plays audio and drives the visuals simultaneously, so there is no
separation between the musician and the visual artist in performance. Each
instrument is purpose-built for the context it plays in.

Funeral for Ashes
EU-funded immersive installation. A 20m square room of projected point clouds —
dying ash trees scanned and rendered as light. Headline commission,
Galway International Arts Festival. 14,000+ attendees.

Live audiovisual event series combining custom electronic instruments with
real-time generative visuals. Sound and image synthesised together in performance.

Custom instrument designed and engineered for SYNAESTHESIA. Combines laser
interruption sensing with MIDI output and real-time visual synthesis.

Moving sculpture exhibited with the Scientific Arts Lab, University of Galway.
Subject of a co-authored scientific paper. Presented at the 2023 International
Conference on Art and Health, MAAT Lisbon. Featured in RTÉ coverage.
